Good governance isn’t just a Board-level concern — it shapes how incentives are designed, who gets appointed to positions of responsibility, and ultimately how well an institution is run from top to bottom.
APRA addresses this through three connected standards: CPS 510 (Governance), CPS 511 (Remuneration) and CPS 520 (Fit and Proper). Rather than treat them as three separate topics, we’ve combined them into a single module — because in practice, that’s how they work together.
Our new self-paced eLearning module brings all three standards together in one 20–30 minute session, part of our four-module APRA Prudential Standards series.
What the module covers
The module opens up each standard in plain business language before connecting it to the regulatory detail: CPS 510’s requirements around Board composition, structure and governance practices; CPS 511’s remuneration frameworks for aligning incentives with sound risk outcomes; and CPS 520’s fit and proper obligations for assessing whether people in positions of responsibility are genuinely suited to hold them. The throughline across all three is the same question — does this institution have the right people, structures and incentives in place to be run well?
Who it’s for
People exploring financial services: a genuine, accurate picture of how governance, incentive design and fit and proper obligations work together — no prior risk or compliance background needed.
People starting out: anyone new to a role touching governance, remuneration design or appointment decisions gets oriented quickly on the framework they’ll be working inside.
All employees: relevant well beyond the boardroom — a useful refresher on how good governance, sensible incentives and fit and proper standards keep an institution well run, and a structured way to keep that knowledge current.
Content approach, activities and video
As with every module in the series, the content leads with plain business language and layers in regulatory terminology only once the underlying concept is clear. It includes hands-on, exploratory interactive activities — not multiple-choice quizzes dressed up as interactivity — including a fit and proper assessment walkthrough, scenario-based decision exercises, and an interactive look at what APRA actually expects of Boards and accountable persons. Short, presenter-led video segments bring each standard to life, drawing on real industry experience to show what good governance looks like in practice.
| 20–30 MINUTES, START TO FINISH Three standards, one sitting — long enough to genuinely cover the framework, short enough to fit into a real workday, with a short knowledge check at the end for compliance attestation and training records. |
